Do you want to add an author’s photo in WordPress? Most of the WordPress themes display an author’s gravatar image as their profile photo by default. However, you can also replace the gravatar image with an actual author photo if you want to.

Today, here at DevotePress, we are going to show you how to easily add an author’s photo in WordPress. But, before we start the article, let’s first see when you need custom author photo in WordPress.

When do you need Custom Author Photo in WordPress?

You can just use an image widget to add your photo and an about page to include more information if you run a single author WordPress site.

But, if you run a multi-author WordPress site, then you might need to add an author bio box at the end of your article to let your users know more about the authors. Author bio box shows an author’s profile photo, brief bio, and links to their website or social networks.

As mentioned above, most of the WordPress themes display an author’s gravatar image as their author photo by default. However, if the author doesn’t have a gravatar image or if they don’t want to use it as their author image, that’s when you need custom author photo in WordPress.

Having said that, let’s get back to our main topic today, let’s learn how to easily add an author’s photo in WordPress.

Add an Author’s Photo in WordPress (with a plugin)

Firstly, you will need to install and activate the WP User Avatar plugin. After activation process, the plugin will automatically add a new menu item labeled Avatars in your WordPress admin bar. Click it and you will be taken to the plugin’s setting page after that.

Here you will be able to choose how you want to display the user avatars on your WordPress site.

This plugin allows users with at least an Author role to upload their own profile photo by default. However, you can change that and allow contributors and subscribers as well.

It also allows you to completely disable Gravatar and only use local avatars on your WordPress website.

Once you are done with the settings, you can click on Save Changes button to save them.

You can now go to Users page and click on the Edit button below a username. On the edit user screen, scroll down to Avatar section. You can click on the Choose Image button to upload the user image.

Click on the Update Profile button to save your changes.

Likewise, the users of your WordPress site will be able to upload their photos by editing their user profile.

You can visit your website to see the changes you’ve made. It will start showing the local avatars as author image for the articles. If a user does not add an author photo, then it will automatically show their gravatar image.
