WordPress Kathmandu November Meetup 2017 concluded

Over 40 WordPress enthusiasts attended WordPress Kathmandu November Meetup 2017 which was held today at Genesis Cafe, Panipokhari, Kathmandu.

Meetups are locally-organized groups that get together for face-to-face events on a regular basis (commonly once a month). Anything that brings together two or more people to share their WordPress experiences counts — there’s no minimum number of attendees or required format. These events (commonly referred to as meetups, which can be confusing since people often use the same word to describe the group itself) take many formats: presentations/lecture series, hack-a-thons, social gatherings, workshops, co-working, running a WordPress help desk, contributor sprints/drives, and others.

The topic for WordPress Kathmandu November Meetup 2017 was “WordPress and IT Career in Nepal”. Mr. Ujwal Thapa, Co-founder of WordPress Nepal shared his experience on this topic. Mr. Thapa is an entrepreneur and changemaker who started his journey as the founder of Digital Max Solutions, an IT company. He is also currently leading various social change initiatives in Nepal. Out of his many ventures, many are well-aware of the rising political force, विवेकशील नेपाली.

The meetup kicked off with the history of WordPress Nepal. Mr. Thapa first started his IT business in Digital Max Solutions back in 1996 with some colleagues. They supported each other to grow the IT industry and slowly started the establishment of WordPress Nepal. His thought about developing the IT field and WordPress community in Nepal is through correct Leadership. In addition to his WordPress talks, he also expressed how the IT industry can create many opportunities for the future generations. He believes that there should be good leadership to create the correct policies and guidelines to help the community to grow in a good working environment. Having more ideas and creativity can help the enthusiasts to start their own business.

According to Mr.Thapa, the right leadership and correct policies can help in strengthening the community in the IT field. He also said that in order to contribute the community individually, one must invest their time and resources and be passionate about their work. One must have the right attitude and right skills in leadership. Experimenting and exploring WordPress can play a huge role to grow the IT community.

Concluding his talk, Mr. Thapa highlighted the immense opportunities that the IT field holds and how important IT is to develop our nation.

Prior to closing the November meetup, Sakin Shrestha and Yam B Chettri took the center stage. Sakin explained about WordCamp Kathmandu 2018 and the first ever Contributor day. WordCamp Kathmandu 2018 will be held on the 17th and 18th of March at Karki Banquet, Babarmahal, Kathmandu. Unlike the previous WordCamps, this time WordCamp Kathmandu 2018 will be a two-day event—17th being the official WordCamp and 18th being the Contributor day.

Sakin was seen emphasizing the importance of contributing; how one can contribute, and what to expect on the contributor day. This is the first ever Contributor day happening in Nepal, so, keeping that in mind, the first Contributor day will only include the basic factors of WordPress, focusing more on team networking. In addition to WordCamp talks, he also talked about WordCamp Asia and the major complications that could be possible. There will surely be a lot of challenges and issues that need to be taken care of as it would be the next big continental WordCamp in the world.

The event was concluded on a high note after a short refreshment and networking session.
