WordPress 4.6

Today, WordPress.org made WordPress 4.6 available to the world. Version 4.6 of WordPress, named “Pepper” in honor of jazz baritone saxophonist Park Frederick “Pepper” Adams III, is available for download or update in your WordPress dashboard. New features and performance improvements in 4.6 help you to focus on the important things while giving a more native feel.

This major release sees many of the features that were featured in the betas of WordPress 4.6 making a return. Users can see some noticeable differences in the appearance, especially in their administration area. For example: With Shiny updates will allow users to update and install plugins and themes without being redirected to the progress screen and native system fonts in WordPress admin area to reduce page load time. Emoji support has been updated to include all of the latest Unicode 9.0 emoji characters.

WordPress 4.6 also improves significant parts of the WordPress core but are mainly intended for developers such as standardized metadata registration, New WP_Post_type Class, New WP_term_Query and HTTP API internal changes.

As most WordPress users spend time on post editor than any other admin screen, WordPress 4.6 makes some editor improvements. With the new version of WordPress, you can worry less about losing content. Content will be saved in your browser as you type, ready to be recovered if an incident should occur. A broken link checker is baked right into this new platform. As you add links in your content, WordPress will immediately highlight any broken errors or typos, giving you an opportunity to correct the error before publishing.

In addition to what has been mentioned above, WordPress 4.6 comes with many other under-the-hood performance and stability improvements. For more details please refer to the company’s official announcement post.

This release was led by Dominik Schilling, backed up by Garth Mortensen as Release Deputy, and with the help of 272 other contributors.
