An Exclusive Interview with Toby Nieboer – WCKTM2019 Speakers

An Exclusive Interview with Toby Nieboer

As said by Charles Dickens, “No one is useless in this world who lightens the burdens of another”, Toby Nieboer follows the same mantra. He is passionate about helping people achieve their goals and dreams. Having worked as a developer himself, these days Toby is responsible for hiring aspiring software engineers at Automattic.

During the recent WCKTM2019, his speech primarily focused on the dos and don’ts, pitfalls that might come along the way and guiding everyone towards doing remote “the right way”. He especially stressed why an individual should (or shouldn’t) embrace Remote Working. Business Owner and fellow Developers were particularly the ones who benefited the most from his speech.

We were very much curious to know about his journey on WordPress, his presentation during the WCKTM2019, his views on his main point of discussion, Remote Working.

He shares, “I would absolutely recommend it (Remote Working) for developers and employers alike. I think there are some things that you need to be aware of in terms of how to go about it effectively.” He adds, “Remote Working is incredibly empowering in terms of giving people access to opportunities and to the talent that they otherwise would not have. But it is also possibly quite damaging if you do it badly.”

“If you don’t know some critical things going into it, you can cause some damage and build some bad habits and create some bad experiences with people. But if take a few things into account it can be an incredible experience.”

We further asked him what the Gutenberg implementation in WordPress would bring to the community. On which, he said, “Gutenberg is going to take publishing in WordPress out of the domain of people from a strictly technical background and make it so that anybody, anywhere can have the ability to publish great looking contents simply and easily. The mission of WordPress has been to democratize the internet and to let anybody with an internet connection to tell their story”. He further adds, “But the original editor wasn’t terribly accessible for people who weren’t from a technical background in terms of anything other than playing text content. Gutenberg is going to make it incredibly easy for people who aren’t as experienced with technology as we are, to make things great easily.”

He shared some brilliant points regarding Remote Working and the Gutenberg implementation. Our team here at DevotePress got to learn a lot from him during such a short time and we would like to offer Mr. Toby a huge “Thank you” for giving us an opportunity to interview him.
