What New Features are coming in WordPress 4.9?

WordPress 4.9 is expected to be released on November 14, 2017. So what are the new features coming in WordPress 4.9? We will guide you through what’s coming in WordPress 4.9.

The software is still under development, so some of these features may not make it to the final release.

New Features Coming in WordPress 4.9

Save and Schedule Theme Changes in Customizer

WordPress 4.9 will present saving theme customizations as a draft. When you make changes to a theme using the customizer, you will have an option to save the changes as a draft instead of making them live.

You are allowed to share the preview of changes with a URL with this new feature. You can send this URL to any user, and they will be able to see your website with the changes made in that precise draft.

WordPress 4.9 will also allow you to schedule changes at a specific time.

The New Gallery Widget

Including rich text, audio, image, and video, WordPress 4.8 bought media widgets. WordPress 4.9 will introduce the new gallery widget. It will allow you to create a native WordPress gallery and add it to any widget ready areas.

Nonetheless, if you want a more powerful gallery with albums, then you will have to look at a third-party plugin like Envira Gallery.

Add Media Button in Text Widget

Previously, you had to include the HTML codes if you wanted to add an image. However, you will not have to deal with the HTML code anymore. WordPress 4.9 will solve this by adding the new ‘Add media’ button on top of the text editor. This will allow users to easily add images inside the rich text widget.

Improved Code Editing Experience

For better code editing experience, WordPress 4.9 will bring you the improved code editor while editing code in custom CSS, theme editor, or plugin editor. This code editor comes with syntax highlighting, code suggestions, and auto-completion. The new feature will automatically fix many common mistakes that cause a user to face syntax error. You will be able to easily disable ‘syntax highlighting’ from your user profile if you distaste it.

Miscellaneous Changes

Here are some other notable features that you can expect in WordPress 4.9:

  • Better mapping for theme widgets and navigation menus after switching themes. (#39693, #39692)
  • Removal of SWFUpload library from the core. (#41752)
  • Recursively search for files in plugin and theme editors. (#6531)

There’s been a lot of talk about improving the user experience so I’m excited about the changes coming in WordPress v4.9. Most of the changes are in the Customiser – I would love to be able to schedule changes to an existing post. Scheduling a change would be especially awesome!

These new features benefit a small number of users, so maybe they’re rolling this out first in the Customiser to ensure Editor rollout in a future version goes smoothly. Who knows, fingers crossed!
