WordPress To Only Promote Hosting Companies Providing Default SSL By 2017

SSL

SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is a technology that ensures the link between your browser and web server is encrypted. It ensures that all your data remains private and integral.

Google, in 2014, announced that it weighs SSL as a ranking factor. Soon enough, it will begin flagging all the unencrypted sites in Chrome.

Previously, SSL used to be difficult to implement, and often expensive or slow. However, with modern browsers and the incredibly successful projects like Let’s Encrypt have made getting a certificate to secure your site fast and free. It is a must in this era that your sites be secure and fool-proof.

Therefore, WordPress gives website owners a reason to enable SSL on their websites. Yesterday, on WordPress Blog, Matt Mullenweg, the co-founder of WordPress posted how and why WordPress will encourage all to have an HTTPS site by default.

First, early in 2017, we will only promote hosting partners that provide a SSL certificate by default in their accounts.”

says Matt.

They will later begin to assess the features that would benefit the most from SSL and make them only enabled when SSL is available, like API authentication.

Moreover, Mullenweg also made mention of the remarkable performance improvements in PHP7 and will consider whether hosting partners should use PHP7 by default in 2017.

Earlier in 2016, WordPress has already encrypted all of its websites using Let’s Encrypt. Matt Mullenweg has been continuously working towards a secure and encrypted web.

Let’s Encrypt is a non-profit, free, automated, and open certificate authority (CA) service provided by the Internet Security Research Group (ISRG). It is an initiative that aims to bring trusted certificates to everyone at no cost. It recently launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds to cover their one-month operations totaling to about $200,000.
