An Interview With Lax Mariappan – WCKTM2022 Speakers

WordCamp Kathmandu 2022 concluded with huge success earlier this month on 4th September at Alice Reception, Garidhara, Kathmandu. We saw many inspiring speakers delivering amazing presentations and talks. Ashish Rai was one of the speakers at WordCamp Kathmandu 2022. The talk was about Vertical Rhythm; Efficiency in WordPress Theme Layout. Thank you, Ashish, for delivering such an exciting talk at the WordCamp and helping us all learn and grow.

Lax is a web developer, Open Source enthusiast, and lover of all things WordPress. He is currently working as a backend engineer at WebDevStudios. Lax has been tinkering with websites since high school but it all changed when he discovered WordPress in 2010. When unplugged, he reads a lot and enjoys traveling around the Philippines.

With that being said, here is the full interview with Lax Mariappan, one of the amazing speakers of WordCamp Kathmandu 2022.

1. Please provide us with your introduction and how you got into WordPress.

I started using WordPress.com in 2009 for a college project. Then started using self-hosted WordPress in 2010. I have used multiple CMS like Drupal, Joomla, and custom-made CMS. When I started using WordPress, never looked back.

2. How do you keep updated with the latest news and trends of WordPress?

I have subscribed to a lot of WP newsletters, blog feeds, YouTube channels, and mainly WordPress official Slack channels.

3. You are one of the speakers for WordCamp Kathmandu 2022 how does that feel?

WP Nepal is an active community. I am amazed by the spirit of the members who organized and volunteered for the event.

4. Were you excited about your talk and what was your talk about?

Yes, I was excited to talk about migrating content using WP CLI

5. What the audience can take away from your presentation like some suggestions or tips? And how will it help in their journey to WordPress?

The main takeaway is to use CLI to export and import content. This requires some programming, it is robust and easy to use.

6. What do you like most about WordCamps?

For me, WordCamps are like a carnival where I enjoy meeting new people and learning from their stories.

7. Why do you think it is important to give back to the community?

The active participation of the community is important for any software. You can contribute by sharing your knowledge, and spreading the word.

8. What advice would you like to give to new WordPress users?

Feel free to ask questions. Try different approaches, share your work publicly, and help others. If you know how to add a menu item, help an absolute beginner to do it.

9. And lastly, is there anything that you would like to share with us?

WordPress provides job opportunities for a variety of skills. You can be a blogger, marketer, developer, or designer – you can find WordPress helpful.

WordPress and WordPress communities can play a direct and indirect role in the lives of many.

And WordPress is inclusive, there is no discrimination of any kind.

Together we can help in reaching the community’s goal of “democratizing the web”
Code is poetry
