Gutenberg Phase Two: Leads, Attentive Towards Customization and Entire Site Layouts

WordPress 5.0 has been slated to release in the month of November with the new Gutenberg editor merged into the core. And as the development process is moving forward, Matt Mullenweg announced on October 5 that the Gutenberg phase two will be led by Alexis Llyod and Riad Benguella. He also wrote in the post that Gutenberg phase two will be focusing on the customization and entire site layouts.

Gutenberg Phase Two

The initial phase (phase 1) of the Gutenberg project was all about upgrading the writing and editing experience of WordPress across posts, pages, and the post types. Whereas, the phase two will emphasize on the post and page customization allowing Gutenberg to handle entire-site layouts. The development includes the replacement of widgets with blocks, so any block will be able to be used in any registered “sidebar” for legacy themes. Also, the developers will upgrade “menus” to a navigation block.

Gutenberg Phase Two Leads

As mentioned above, the Gutenberg Phase Two will be led by Alexis Llyod and Riad Benguella.

Alexis Llyod is the Head of Design Innovation at Automattic. She will be handling the design and product side for the Gutenberg phase two project.

Likewise, Riad Benguella is a JavaScript Engineer at Automattic and he will be leading the technical side of the project.

Matt Mullenweg ended the announcement post saying he will be discussing the phase 3 and 4 of Gutenberg at WordCamp US 2018 happening in December.
