WordPress 4.9.4 maintenance release is now available. This maintenance release was issued by WordPress yesterday, just after a day of WordPress 4.9.3 release, and it carries a very crucial update with it.
WordPress 4.9.4 is the first minor release of WordPress in over four years since WordPress 3.7 was released where not all users will be receiving an automatic update.
The main reason behind this quick maintenance release was that WordPress 4.9.3 maintenance release update had been affected by a severe bug that caused sites supporting automatic background updates to fail to update automatically, and would require action from you (or your host) for it to be updated to version 4.9.4. And the bug was discovered only after the release of 4.9.3.
If you haven’t updated your website to 4.9.4 yet, you’re likely to encounter a PHP Fatal error when WordPress tries to update itself to WordPress 4.9.4, and you’ll be required to update your website manually through the WordPress dashboard or hosts update tools.
WordPress managed hosting companies who install updates automatically for their customers can install the update as normal, and we’ll be working with other hosts to ensure that as many customers of theirs who can be automatically updated to WordPress 4.9.4 can be.
